Interior renovation of a townhouse in Antwerp

A new interior for a historic townhouse, with respect for the original architecture: authentic elements were carefully preserved, restored and incorporated into a contemporary whole.

The brief

The client chose an outspoken design by Contekst, which approaches the character of the existing home in a surprising way. For us, the greatest challenge lay in translating that design to the site. Together with the architect we carefully aligned materials, colours and finishes, with particular attention to detailing. In this way we brought the design to life step by step, as one coherent whole full of character.

The approach

This project called for looking beyond our usual way of working. Alongside our permanent team of specialists, we brought in specialised craftspeople who could help carry the special character of the design. The material choices also took us into new territory: for every new material and technique we investigated how best to apply it. Even the sanitary fittings came from different parts of the world. It was precisely that search, and the collaboration between all parties, that made this project technically special.

Materials and finishes

  • Authentic plank floor, preserved and incorporated into the new design
  • SEMCO shower
  • Glazed 10 x 10 cm tiles in the kitchen and bathroom
  • Kitchen worktop in concrete and marble
  • Veneered bespoke joinery
