Townhouse Mechelen
Renovation and extension of a 1960s townhouse in Mechelen
The materials of the extension were deliberately kept raw, as a clear separation between the existing house and the sleek new extension.

The brief
The client wanted to renew his 1960s home, with more space for a kitchen and dining area.
The approach
The existing part of the home received a facelift and was fitted with new building services. The old plank floor was preserved and sanded. At the rear, a modern extension was built, with a floor and ceiling in exposed concrete. This new extension houses the kitchen and dining area of the home.
Did you know?
To be able to work smoothly, the front facade was opened up during the works. After the works it was restored to its original state.
Materials and finishes
- Exposed concrete for the floor and ceiling of the extension
- White interior joinery in HPL
- Aluminium exterior joinery
- The original plank floor, preserved and sanded
