Family home in Brussels
A powerful home with a brutalist character, in which the raw materials have deliberately been left exposed.
The brief
The home already radiated plenty of character. The assignment was to convert it thoroughly, without it being visible afterwards that any conversion had taken place. Because the masonry, the concrete and the timber structure remain exposed, fitting the home with new building services was no simple task.
The approach
We thought carefully in advance about the position of every new service shaft, so that the shafts blend into the existing architecture and do not stand out as a later addition. In this way the raw character of the home was fully preserved, with the technology and comfort of today.
